Movin’On, an international coalition initiated by Michelin and now supported by a broad ecosystem of public and private players, has launched a strategic review of the future of light mobility in Europe. As part of this initiative, mRT has been asked to contribute to the study and drafting of a white paper on the M0 category, a new segment of light, safe and accessible vehicles. The stakes are high: between L7e quadricycles, which are too limited, and M1 cars, which have become heavy and expensive, there is a lack of solutions suited to everyday journeys, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas.
The absence of an intermediate regulatory framework is hindering the emergence of fuel-efficient, affordable vehicles that are consistent with European climate objectives. To address this impasse, mRT contributed its technical expertise, its analysis of real-world usage and its ability to structure credible industrial compromises. The team helped define the essential criteria for an M0 vehicle: low weight, appropriate speed, compact battery, targeted safety and reduced footprint. MRT also participated in formalising usage scenarios, LCA analyses and consolidating the technical requirements presented in the white paper.
This contribution has helped align stakeholders around a shared, realistic vision of light mobility. The research shows that an M0 vehicle could cover 95% of daily journeys, reduce usage costs and significantly lower environmental impact. The approach illustrates the importance of field expertise in designing more economical mobility solutions that are better suited to citizens’ needs.
